Choosing A Memory Supplement

Choosing a memory supplement: a method that works on any label, including Memodyne

Start with the panel, then compare the amounts against the trials the ingredient names came from.

Almost everything else on a memory supplement label — the seal wall, the ingredient count, the blend name, the testimonial block — is designed to be persuasive rather than informative. Two numbers and a comparison settle most of it.

Six steps for reading a label in this aisle, applied at the end to the product this shop sells.

The method

Six steps for reading a memory supplement label

Find the Supplement Facts panel before anything else

It is the only part of a container with a legally defined format, and it is where the amounts live. A product that does not publish one is asking to be judged on names alone, and names alone cannot be judged.

Take the three largest amounts and look them up

Not the full list. The three biggest numbers are what the capsule is mostly made of, and finding the trials behind those three is an evening's work that settles most purchases.

Compare each one against the amount its trial used

This is the step almost nobody takes and it is the whole method. An ingredient at a twentieth of its studied dose is a name on a label. An ingredient at its studied dose is a reason to consider the product.

Count the names against the capsule size

A capsule holds a finite volume. Twelve names in one capsule is twelve small amounts, and a claim of synergy does not change the volume. A shorter list is usually a stronger product.

Read what each emblem is a statement about

Facility marks are about a factory. Sourcing marks are about inputs. Neither is about what is in the bottle, and a wall of nine emblems is usually five assurances about a supply chain.

Then look at the refund terms, and only then at the price

Window length, what it is counted from, who pays return postage, and whether a minimum use period is attached. In a category sold by direct response, the refund terms are most of what a buyer is actually purchasing.

Honest critique

What a memory supplement label is designed to make you feel

ElementWhat it suggestsWhat it actually tells you
A long ingredient listComprehensive coverageThat each amount is small, because capsule volume is fixed
A proprietary blend with a totalA protected formulaThe total and nothing about the split
A wall of emblemsIndependent verificationFacts about a factory and a supply chain
A clinical-sounding ingredient nameThat it has been testedThat the ingredient has been tested, somewhere, at some amount, in somebody
A star score on the seller's own pageConsensusWhat the sixth or eighth of buyers who wrote anything thought
A struck-through priceA discountA comparison figure chosen by whoever wrote the page

Six standard elements. None of them is dishonest on its own and all six together are designed to substitute for the panel.

The defence is unglamorous: read the panel, look up three ingredients, and ignore the rest of the page until you have done it.

Category comparison

The four groups a memory supplement belongs to

GroupExamplesWhat the evidence looks like
Vitamins and mineralsB vitamins, multivitamins, calciumCOSMOS-Web and COSMOS-Mind both found small memory improvements in older adults from a daily multivitamin. The best randomised evidence in the aisle, and the cheapest
Botanical nootropicsGinkgo, bacopa, huperzineThe GEM trial randomised 3,069 adults over 75 to 120 mg of ginkgo twice a day and found no reduction in dementia
Nitric-oxide amino acidsArginine, citrulline, arginine AKGStrong for blood pressure and exercise; one small trial for cerebral blood flow, in athletes
Unapproved drug ingredientsCentrophenoxine and relativesFound in cognitive-enhancement supplements in a 2022 analysis. Avoid

Knowing which group a product belongs to answers more than any review does.

The uncomfortable conclusion of that table is that the group with the best randomised evidence is also the plainest and the cheapest. A daily multivitamin is not an exciting purchase and it is the one with the trial behind it.

Worked example

Applying the method to Memodyne

StepWhat it yields on Memodyne
Find the panelThere is none in the supplied artwork. This is the product's weakest point and everything below follows from it
Take the three largest amountsNot possible. No amounts are published
Compare against the trialsThe trials can be found and the amounts read — 8.8 g, 12 g, 3 g, 1,200 mg — but the other column stays empty
Count the names against the capsuleSix names in one capsule, four of them doing the same job
Read the emblemsNine of them, five about the facility and the supply chain
Read the refund termsSixty days from purchase, thirty days of use asked for first, return postage the buyer's. Clear, and better than average

This shop sells this product and still prints this table, because a reader who applies the method will produce it anyway.

The honest summary: strong on purchase terms, ordinary on manufacturing marks, and weak on disclosure. A buyer who wants a daily routine and is comfortable with that trade will get on with it. A buyer who wants to check the arithmetic cannot, and should weigh that heavily. The ingredients page takes it further.

Questions

Choosing a memory supplement: questions Memodyne buyers ask

What should I look for on a memory supplement label?

A Supplement Facts panel with amounts, first. Without one, no comparison between a product and the research behind its ingredients can be completed, and everything else on the label is decoration.

Is a longer ingredient list better?

Usually the reverse. Capsule volume is finite, so a list of twelve names in one capsule means twelve small amounts. Four names at studied doses would be a better product and a worse advertisement.

What does a proprietary blend hide?

The split. A blend total tells you how much of everything and nothing about how much of anything, which is the point of it.

Do seals and emblems mean a supplement is tested?

Most of them are about the facility or the sourcing rather than the contents. Read what each emblem is a statement about before letting it do any work.

Two months to decide, and the seller asks you to spend one of them taking it

The clock starts on the day the order is paid for, not the day the box arrives, which makes it the shorter and safer of the two readings. Against that, the seller's own terms ask for 30 days of use before a refund request — so the real decision window is the second month, and that is worth knowing before choosing a pack size. Refunds are opened by telephone with an order ID in hand; the refund policy page walks through the rest of it.
